ASUU to decide on Thursday whether to suspend the strike

Two courts had previously ordered ASUU to return to work.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) will decide Thursday, Oct. 13, 2022, whether to continue or suspend its strike.

Following the meeting between the union and the Speaker of the House of Representatives on Monday, October 10, 2022, there were rumors that the union had called off the strike.

However, an anonymous ASUU member who spoke with Daily Trust dismissed that rumor and said union members would meet on Thursday.

"What is circulating is just a rumor. There are ways to solve these kinds of problems in ASUU. Our NEC will meet on Thursday to make a decision," the source said.

The ASUU started an indefinite strike on Monday, February 14, 2022, to enforce its demands on the government to meet demands.

Several negotiation meetings between the union and the government had failed to produce an agreement, so the government finally dragged the union to the National Labor Court.

It will be recalled that on Wednesday, September 21, 2022, the court ordered ASUU to call off the strike.

Judge Polycarp Hamman enjoined the lecturers from continuing the strike until the federal government's case against them is decided.

However, the union was not satisfied with the ruling and appealed the decision to the Court of Appeals.

The Court of Appeal upheld the labor court's decision and ordered ASUU to resume work immediately.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Labour Congress commended the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, for his intervention in the crisis between the union and the government.
